Heaven’s Unwanted Child: A Heaven Mystery (Heaven Murder Mysteries Book 14)

About

It was ten minutes past five in the morning. The hint of fall in early October had left a swath of cold air across the entire region, and Mildred was cold. Her first delivery of firewood wouldn’t arrive for another two weeks and the small electric heater was struggling to keep her bedroom above sixty degrees.
Reggie, her German Shepherd, was whining and had jumped off the bed ten minutes earlier. Now he was at the front door and the volume of his whine had increased.

“Okay, alright!” Mildred snapped as she shoved her feet in her sneakers and pulled on her jacket. “Why do you always have to go out so damn early?” she said as she snapped the leash on the dogs collar.
Reggie pawed at the door and barked. “Just a darn minute!” Mildred snapped and yanked the door open. It was then she saw the real reason Reggie was in such a rush to get outside.A cardboard box sat in front of the door. It’s loose top flaps standing upright and down inside, the two white and pink flannel blankets was the small round pink face of a baby.Mildred snatched up the box, slammed the door and made her way to the kitchen table. She set the box on it and reached in to pick up it’s contents.

“Oh my you’re in need of a change.” she announced and unwrapped the blankets. “Now let me see what I can get to change you. She pulled open a kitchen drawer and rummaged. “Here we go this will do for now.” she said pulling out a cotton dishtowel.

The child was cold and Mildred cuddled it to her chest while Reggie watched with anxious brown eyes.
“It’s okay, Reggie,” Mildred said “Someone left this poor child out in the cold. Soon as I get her a bit warm we’re going to have to make a phone call.”

The dog cocked his head and whined.

“NO, we can’t keep her!” Mildred said sternly. “No she needs more care than I can afford.”

She took a deep breath and picked up the phone.
